Wei Zhang, Ning Han, Yuhai Dou, Xuan Zhang, Jiangshui Luo, Shixue Dou, and Jan Fransaer have published a new review on the use of cobalt phosphide-based materials in electrocatalysis in ACS Catalysis (Vol. 15, Issue 7, 2025).
The article provides a comprehensive overview of Co-P compounds such as Co₂P, CoP, and CoP₂, which have shown great promise as cost-effective and chemically stable alternatives to precious-metal catalysts for water splitting, oxygen reduction, polysulfide electrocatalysis, and other key processes in clean energy systems. The review outlines synthetic methods, structure–activity relationships, and optimization strategies, with a focus on understanding active sites in cobalt phosphides for water splitting and the critical role of precursor transformations. The work offers clear pathways toward the design of durable, high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions.
